Science Programme

The Beckley Foundation’s principle scientific objectives are to investigate the neurophysiology underlying conscious states, and how physiological changes in the brain - that occur with age, meditation, or the ingestion of psychoactive substances - are reflected in changes in our consciousness and cognitive functioning, and how these changes may be beneficial to health and well-being.

Towards this aim the Beckley Foundation has established collaborative research projects with leading scientists in the fields of neurophysiology, biochemistry, psychiatry and psychology, at renowned scientific and academic institutions both in Great Britain and abroad.

A summary of some of the current studies is given below:

Cranial Compliance

1. Investigating Cerebral Circulation, Cranial Compliance, Trepanation and the Aging Process

Cannabis

2. Identifying The Neurobiological Correlates Of The Subjective Effects Of Cannabis That Users Find Beneficial

3. Investigating the Physiological Effects Of THC and the Therapeutic Potential Of CBD

4. The Effects of Cannabis Use on Creativity

5. The Efficacy of Cannabis in Medical Use

Psilocybin

6. A Pilot Study of Psilocybin-Facilitated Addiction Treatment

7. Investigating Changes in Cerebral Blood Flow and Affective Responses to Emotional Stimuli Brought About by Psilocybin

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

8. Investigating Altered States Of Consciousness Induced By Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

9. Investigating Changes in Cerebral Blood Flow and CSF Movement Following Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

10. The Treatment of Cluster Headaches Using 2-Bromo-Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

11. Swiss Pilot Study Investigating the use of LSD in the Palliative care of the Dying

Meditation and Neuro-feedback

12. Psychophysiological Monitoring of States of Consciousness as a Tool for Assistance in Meditation

13. Investigating the Neurobiology of Meditative States

14. Developing a Cognition Detection System to Improve State Diagnoses in Non-Responsive Patients
